Iranian National Commission for UNESCO honors Rumi expert Mohammad-Ali Movahhed

The 96-year-old Rumi expert, Mohammad-Ali Movahhed, was honored by the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO during a special ceremony at the University of Tehran on Tuesday.

The ceremony was organized to celebrate his lifelong career in the study of poet and mystic Molana Jalal ad-Din Rumi and his mentor Shams.

Speaking during the meeting, Iranian National Commission for UNESCO director Hojjatollah Ayyubi said that Movahhed had already rejected their call to organize the ceremony.

He asked the organization to hold meetings instead to commemorate French Orientalist and Hafez expert Charles-Henri de Fouchecour or Shams, Ayyubi added.

Movahhed finally agreed to attend after the organizers assured him that the ceremony will be in memory of De Fouchecour.

“If we want to celebrate mysticism and literature, we should acknowledge master Movahhed, if we are interested in Iran and Islam, we should respect him,” Ayyubi stated.

In his brief speech, Movahhed said that he was preparing himself to attend a ceremony scheduled to commemorate De Fouchecour. “Mr. Ayyubi played a trick on me,” he joked.

He called the Iranian education system inefficient and asked cultural officials to get people to be rid of it.

“By striving, everybody can achieve whatever he/she wants,” Movahhed said and added, “Rumi, who was the outstanding faqih (Islamic jurist), reached the highest mystic eminence by his endeavors,” he concluded.

Last December, a new corrected copy of Rumi’s masterpiece Masnavi-ye Manavi by Movahhed was unveiled at the Academy of Persian Language and Literature in Tehran.

He has also authored books on various subjects, one of which “Tant De Doute Pour Une Evidence” on the Persian Gulf was published in France by the London-based publisher Candle and Fog this year.
