Iran Geographical Situation

The Islamic Republic of Iran, in its present political and geographical territories, covers an area of about 1,648,000 square kilometers. It is situated in the northern hemisphere and the southwest of Asia. Its area equals the areas of seven countries; namely England, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg.

 

The territory of Iran is located on the crumpled belt of the Mediterranean Himalayas- Indonesia, called the Tetis. The belt was originally formed some 1.4 billion years ago and its present shape was formed about 800 million years ago in the wake of the plies of the Alps. The country of Iran extends over a great part of Iranian plateau. It has around 7,744 kilometers of ground and marine borders with Turkmenistan, Azarbayjan and Armenia in the north, Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east and turkey and Iraq in the west. The length of the southern coastlines of Iran, apart from the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, is 1,952 kilometers. The most strategic energy throat of the world, called the Strait of Hormuz, is situated in this region.
