Amir Chakhmaq Square, Yazd

Buyid Dynasty (934–1062)

The Buyid dynasty was likewise founded by a soldier of fortune, Ali b. Buyeh, and his brothers. They came from another remote and heterodox region, the mountainous area of Gilan known as Daylam. Caliphal authority was late being established and was always tenuous; just as Kharijites had flocked to Sistan, descendants of Imam Ali and their Shai supporters had often taken refuge in Daylam and shaped the development of Islam there.

Several petty dynasties of local rulers came from Daylam, but the Buyids were the most successful by far. Ali b.Boyeh had hired out his services to a strange generalissimo by the name of Mardavij but later broke with him.

Mardavij, who had seized much of the west of Iran, was descended from the Iranian provincial aristocracy, was a non-Muslim, and had openly vowed to destroy the “empire of the Arabs” and restore Zoroastrianism and the Iranian empire. His grand designs were cut short by his assassination while celebrating a Zoroastrian festival in Isfahan in 935. Ali b. Buyeh and his brothers then took over most of his territory. Ali sent his brother Ahmad to occupy Khuzestan, and from there Ahmad was able to advance on and enter Baghdad in 945, essentially unopposed. After securing recognition and lofty titles from the caliph Moktafi, the Buyids deposed him and installed Moti, a pitiful Abbasid puppet, in his place. The politics of the Buyid rulers is far too complex to discuss here; suffice it to say that they shared out their empire among the members of the family, generally recognizing one as the first among equals, and various Buyids ruled in Mesopotamia and west of Iran for more than a century.
