The Art and Architecture of Achaemanids

In 645 B.C. Ashuro Banipal king of Ashur, took over the Elam Empire, and as a result the Achaemanids monarchy found the chance to gain power. In 559B.C. Cyrus took over Asia Minor and expanded it to Persian Gulf and also added two countries; Ashur and Babel. The remaining of Cyrus Castle in Pasargod show that he was in favor of magnificent architecture with combined ornaments from Ashur, Babel and Urarto. In this way he wanted his country to be known as the true inheritor of these three civilized cultures Darius and his Ancestor Khashayar Shah granted Cyrus's wish by building Takht-e-Jamshid (Persepolis). The floor plan in Takht-e-Jamshid was totally different from others in Ashur and Babel.

The main featureis a huge hall, named Apadana, which was probably developed form of tent in nomadic life style. This hall had a wide roof standing on ma y columns. Since Zoraster had banned polytheism in Achaemanids' art, it was not common to create idols or many temples in each city. For this, they have just left a few Zoroastrian temples as religious buildings. Some of Achaemenids' art works, are tombs of kings carved from standing rocks. Pasargod and Naqhsh-e Rostam are examples and they were embossed works carved from the rocks include images of Fara-va-har and Zoroastrian angles (Mitra or Mehr, Nahid or Anahita) the kings, companions, and soldiers in ceremonial and religious scenes, hunts and battles engraved on cliffs or stony walls of palaces, and statues of animals such as lions, cows, and horses which are also used on the capitals can be seen, moreover, creatures such as winged buffalos with the head of human, winged lions with the head of a phoenix, griffins, and also inscriptions with Parsi cuneiform can be seen. These are artistic and cultural traces left by the Achaemanids.

The elevated forms on the stone- made walls, in Takht-e-Jamshid, shows queues of soldiers and courtiers of king, internal and taxpayers of different types who are paying tax and bringing gifts to the king, with a side view head and a freeze gesture. They are similar to each other and their faces are emotionless. These characters were made so strong and elegant, that enables them to have strength and stability.

The Achaemanids art such as, technical skill, silver smith, goldsmith, wood carving, molding, bronze working, cloth manufacturing, carpet was so elegant that Persian artwork were sent as ellegant gifts to far places such as Jeyhoon, the Altaii mountains and Egypt. An lthough some of these work were influenced by Greek art, they still had huge impacts on the art of other existing nations such as lndia.
