Taziyeh

Taziyeh (meaning Condolence Theater) is a traditional Persian theatrical genre in which the drama is conveyed predominantly through music and dramatic narration. In Persian tradition, Taziyeh and Pardeh-khani (dramatic narration that accompanies events depicted on painted curtains), were inspired by religious and historical events, symbolizing epic spirit and resistance. The common theme is the heroic tales of resistance against the evil, love and sacrifice. It is a play on religious rituals, which is especially performed in Iran during the holy month of Moharram concurrent with the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hossein (AS) and 72 of his companions in Karbala.

In the evenings, taziyeh (literally “consolation”) are staged to reenact the story of the martyrdom of Ali’s descendants. Some plays are satirical, directed against wrongdoers, but most form a set of tragedies, performed on the ten successive days of Moharram. Since the Safavid rule, when the Shia faith has become the official religion of Iran, the Moharram ceremonies have been held on an enormous scale.
