Shaking Minarets (MenarJonban

Located to the west ofEsfahan is the Shrine ofAbdullah Soqla, thevaulted structure built in1316 over the tomb of theSufi hermit. This Ilkhanid building is decorated with dark blue tilesthat cover the inner sideof its arch. It features themost famous minarets inthe city.

This small bricktowers rise some 6 m (20ft.) above the eivan andbelong to the later, probably Safavid, period. Theminarets are elegantlyornamented with lovelybut unpretentious brickwork.

Narrow spiral staircases lead to the summitsof the minarets, which are pierced by open arches.

What is most remarkable about the minarets is that a strong push givento the top of one ofthem makes itoscillate. Curiously, this movement isalso transmitted toanother minaretand even to theporch itself. In theory, all minarets can sway, but thispair sways in anespecially obviousmanner because of theratiobetween the heightand width of the arch (it is10 m/ 32 ft. high and 10m/ 32 ft.wide), and theshortness and lightness ofthe minarets (7 m 23/ft.tall and 4 m/13 ft. in circumference).

Woodencrossbars on the top of theminarets further facilitatethe movement. Perhapsthe whole thing wasintended to be a mild conjuring trick to amuse simple minds. However, for a long time, until the riddleof the minarets had beensolved, the pious entertained a supernaturalexplanation, with someclaiming that the movement was caused by theSufi, who was allegedlyalive in his tomb. Thephenomenon of shakingminarets is not confinedto this site. Another examplecan be found

only 50km (31 mi) away at Oshtorjan.

The constant shaking hascaused considerable structural damage, and now
theminarets cannot beclimbed. Therefore, thepopularity of the siteamong
tourists has diminished considerably.
